‘The media are not toys… they can be entrusted only to new artists, because they are art forms.’
(McLuhan, 1954)

Unfold and Reveal

Iro explored the idea that architectural drawings can be regenerated by applying her personal inclinations and revealing her “inner world”.

Taking the starting point of projective drawings allowed Iro to understand different spatiality’s and view points - from axonometric to perspectival - as well as to use these to rethink the architectural drawings themselves and to free them from the ‘architectural project’. Her interest in subjectivity, surrealism and automatic drawing was brought in to challenge the objectivity of architectural drawings - through a series of pencil sketches and watercolours. These works lead to a final painting on canvas which revealed a composition of geometry and organic forms - a world of pure imagination.

Course description
Works on Paper
With Miraj Ahmed

A description borrowed from fine art is used here to explore the idea that architectural drawings can have a life of their own away from the baggage of the ‘project’. In this regard the architectural drawing conventions can be questioned, used, mis-used and extended - where the drawings can exist for their own as well as cross over into other media and spaces.
