Nikola Da Silva Azevedov
CMS1 First Year
Based on initial explorations using found formwork, Nikola chose a simple geometrical unit- a cylinder cut from standard UPVC- to generate a series of cast concrete samples. What made her project exceptional was the sheer volume of distinctive casts she produced. She demonstrated ingenuity and initiative in sourcing a wide range of aggregates, and experimented with multiple combinations and ratios of these. She also made full use of the opportunity to cut her casts, setting up internal geometries that were revealed in the cut surfaces. An exceptional body of work that is more than the sum of its many parts.
Adventures in Casting
with Juliet Haysom
This course explores the physical transformation of certain materials over time and the reciprocal relationship between mould and cast form. Working with pigments, aggregates and additives, creating and testing processes such as the jetwash, etch, cut, and polish, students will develop a series of appropriate methods for translating void into form.
